I have received an invitation to a book launch
from a man whose manuscript I edited
and by whom I was paltrily paid.
The invite came by email.
‘Do I have to buy a book?’ I emailed back.
‘Well, it is a book launch,’ he said.
I couldn’t argue with that.
‘The thing is,’ I said, ‘ I have no interest
in the topic and at $37 a copy
it is a little steep.’ I waited for an answer.
And then I got irate. I emailed back,
‘And anyway,’ I said,
‘whatever happened to my complimentary copy?
Not everyone who attends a book launch
buys a book.’
He couldn’t argue with that.
And he didn’t. Now I don’t know whether
to go to the book launch or not.
What would you do?

Now THAT is a bit of a dilemma. Too bad you didn’t have one on the go at about the same time–you could return the favour.
But then…if you search hard enough, I bet you could recall that ummm prior engagement :>)

Go. Get your beaming picture taken with him for the local newspaper. It will be an event. Publicity is always good. He’ll be your friend for life because you may be the only one there. He’ll come to your book launch. Trade books.

it will be interesting to sere how many turn up; the book is aimed at a small niche market ; if he misses that, his sales are doomed

I want to hear the end of this story. The suspense is killing me.

Hi Margaret
it’s happening in real time so I don’t know how it’s going to pan out either; but I’m dying to find out
